Why this keeps happening
Hosts retire old PHP versions on a schedule, and the schedule is not yours. When a theme or plugin written years ago isn't compatible, the upgrade produces a blank screen or the “critical error” page. The fix is mechanical but slow: every file gets scanned, patched, and then actually exercised, because the scanners miss roughly a third of what breaks.

After the rescue
Once the site is current, the updates keep coming. Two ways to keep it that way:
- Keep current. A scheduled update pass every month, at a fixed fee: core, theme, and plugin updates applied on a staging copy, tested, and deployed on the same day each month. If a critical vulnerability is published for something on your site, it's patched within two working days instead of waiting for the next pass. Not on-call, not a ticket queue, and no surprise invoices. $175 a month, or $1,750 a year.
- Convert. When you decide the updates themselves are the problem, the site becomes plain pages with nothing left to update. Convert within six months and half your Rescue fee comes off the price.
